Buying property in southern France by the British is now extremely popular. Many think that this trend was initiated by Peter Mayle’s book "A year in Provence" and the resulting TV adaptation featuring John Thaw. Provence became very desirable, with property prices rising accordingly. Subsequently, people looked to buy property in neighbouring provinces. This ripple out effect, coupled with more UK TV programmes extolling the housing and lifestyles to be found in these sunny European climes means that areas such as the Tet Valley in the Pyrénées-Orientales and Languedoc-Roussillon regions are rapidly gaining in popularity.

In the Roussillon region the most expensive location is almost certainly the very picturesque town of Collioure, with prices reducing further away from the Mediterranean coast.

Although house prices continue to rise fairly sharply at the moment, most people should identify real value for money, especially when compared to UK property prices.
