Wine & Gastronomy in Roussillon, Pyrenees Orientales, south France
The Gite and B&B are well positioned to help you to explore and enjoy
the local wine and food in Roussillon, when on holiday.
Roussillon
wines are beginning to gain a reputation for producing some very good
wines. There are 13 AOC's which include Collioure, Cote du Rousillon Villages,
Maury, Banyuls and Muscat de Rivesaltes. Most wine is red but some rose &
white wine is produced. The grape variety grenache is widely used in this
region.
The Muscat wines are particularly delicious; sweet, high in alcohol content
and are often offered as an aperitif.
Local caves (wine production sites) at Belesta, Caramany, Marquixanes &
Rivesaltes are well worth a visit. You can have a guided tour and sample the
fortified aperitif wines at the Byrrh
Cellar in Thuir.
The Tet valley has a superb climate for agriculture and in particular fruit growing. Although it is easy to find Kiwi fruit, Cherries & Apples growing in the fields, the most important crop is peaches. In late March, the valley is pink with Peach blossom.
Olives are grown locally and it is possible to buy olive oil direct from
the producer in Millas.
At the seaside, there are plenty of shellfish & fish; specialities include
the anchovy and sardines landed in the ports of Collioure & Port Vendres.
Olives stuffed with anchovies prove a delicious combination.
